Nosotros're working our way through the alphabet, and my kids love to add together some sensory play to their learning.  This fourth dimension I waited until my 6 was home from first course, because I knew she'd want to join her little brothers in this activity: N is for Noodles! N is for Noodles sensory play - the measured mom

Have you seen all the hundreds of ideas for messy play floating around Pinterest? If you're like me, y'all may have thought, "Those moms are crazy. Don't they have more than to do than get stains out of apparel?"

Offset of all, nosotros wore quondam clothes.

Second, I don't do this sort of affair very often — because it's hard for me to get my nervus up to let my kids get skillful and messy.  Just when I neglect messy sensory play, my kids are missing out.

Sensory play, messy or non, has countless benefits for young children.  It's non near making a mess. Information technology's about learning through play.

why sensory play matters - the measured mom

1. Kids are designed to explore the world through their senses.  Setting up a multi-sensory way to play gives our kids rich opportunities to acquire.

2. Sensory play promotes linguistic communication development.  Kids find new means to talk about their world.

three. Engaging in sensory play with peers or siblings builds social skills.  At our business firm that may sound like, "He's in the spaghetti and I want to scoop it out!" That's when we go to talk about what to do when someone we're playing with isn't doing what we'd like.  My tolddler, who doesn't say much on his own yet, observed how his older siblings handled the materials and tried out their ideas.

iv. Sensory play is bully for building motor skills.   Scooping, cut, and pouring the noodles = fine motor.  Running around and throwing it in the air = large motor.

5. Exploring sensory materials helps kids' emotional development.  It tin can exist very calming for kids – relieving energy or stress – and bring a great corporeality of joy equally they explore materials in an exciting way.

vi. Since how kids apply sensory materials is much more important than what they brand with information technology, sensory play promotes creativity.  Past solving problems or engaging in make-believe, their creativity is enhanced.

Here were my supplies for our noodle sensory play:

  • bowls
  • utensils of all kinds, including pizza cutters
  • food coloring
  • oil
  • scoops and funnels
  • a large plastic bin
  • spaghetti noodles

Since all 4 of my kids would be playing in the noodles, I prepared four boxes of spaghetti.  (Unremarkably I would not use whole wheat spaghetti for sensory play, but I got it for an amazing deal!)  Subsequently I had cooked and cooled information technology, my Six helped me color the noodles.

Before the kids pigeon in with their spoons, I asked if they wanted a chance to walk in the noodles.  Well, of course.

Nosotros didn't encourage my One to take a turn considering I didn't want him to skid.  It took some balance to stay upright!

Then the kids got to work with their scoops and spoons.

They each took a portion of noodles — and squished, squeezed, and stirred.  (I'one thousand thinking this activity would besides work swell for letter South!)

My Ane loved flinging the noodles in the air – thankfully, we were able to distract him with a plastic spoon.

When we pull out something like this, I try to requite the kids a lot of freedom.  They wore old wearing apparel and were allowed to practise whatever they wanted as long as they didn't brand each other unhappy.

My Five and Half-dozen took me at my word — after making it pelting noodles, they began rubbing the pasta on their stomachs.  Before long after this pic they were headed straight for the bath!

Do you let your kids go skilful and messy?
